Krakow: One day Trip to Slovakia

If you stay in Krakow long enough to be able to plan a full day excursion, we bring you very interesting offer for visiting one of our neighbouring countries – Slovakia. It is small country but full of tourist attractions including the natural sites in Tatra Mountains which cover significant part of Slovakia and also numerous cultural monuments situated in many different regions and towns. Journey from Krakow to southern border of Poland with Slovakia takes approximately 2 hours so during our one day trip we may only focus on highlights of northern part of the country but there is still such variety of attractions that we offer you 2 different options for itinerary of this tour. We hope that at least one of the them meets your expectations.
We offer private full day tours to Slovakia from Krakow on request in 2 different options:

Option 1

Oravsky Castle & open-air museum in Zuberec and Brestova

During this tour we will take you to Oravsky Castle – picturesquely situated above the Orava river on a natural, high rock formation which shape reminds an „eagle nest”. Built in 13th century and rebuilt into current look by Thurzo Family in the end of 16th century and beginning of 17th century, today is one of the most popular tourist attractions in the northern part of Slovakia. You will visit the interiors of the castle with the combination of different architecture styles were nowadays there is a museum. Afterwards, we will drive toward Zuberec and Brestova to show you very unique place – an open-air Museum of the Orava Village known to be one of the most beautiful museums in the country. You will admire traditional peasant houses, larders, wooden church, linen-makers houses etc.

Tour itinerary:

  1. hotel pick up at chosen time in the morning
  2. approx 2,5 hours drive from your hotel in Krakow to Oravsky Castle in Slovakia
  3. visiting the Oravsky Castle with assistance of our private guide in chosen language for approx 1 hour and 15 min during so-called Main tour of the Castle that will allow you to see:
  • Lower Castle – here are the points of the main part of the tour – the Historical Exhibition, Renaissance interiors and Thurzo Palace
  • Middle Castle – includes the Historical Exhibition, the Natural History Exhibition and the Ethnographic Exhibition
  • Upper Castle – the part where you will find the oldest architecture of the castle – the Citadel which now hosts the Archaeological Exhibition and Media Library; it also includes the fortification system

4. free time for lunch in a local inn nearby the castle where you will have a chance to try delicious local meals
5. approx 30 min drive from Oravsky Castle to the open-air Museum of the Orava Village in Zuberec and Brestova
6. up to 1,5 hour of sightseeing of the Museum with assistance of our private guide in chosen language during which you will see:

  • Market Place of the Lower Orava – symbolizes the valuable side of the region with bigger, classy houses
  • Lane of the Zamagurie Region – houses and farmsteads of rich and medium rich farmers, represents the typical structure of an Orava village
  • Goral Settlement – demonstrates the poorest part of the village located in the south-eastern slopes of the Oravske Beskydy mountains.
  • Late-Gothic wooden church and cemetery – built in the 15th century
  • Mill – stands near the brook also with a sawmill and fulling mill with the common water-driven mechanism

7. approx 3 hours drive back from Zuberec and Brestova to Krakow

Option 2

Treetop tour in Bachledova Valley & Spis Castle

During this tour we will take you to very unique attraction of northern Slovakia – Bachledka Treetop Walk which is situated at the border of Tatra Mountains National Park and Pieniny Mountains. You will stroll along the path high above the ground which is 600 metres long and relax in a green scenery of the forest. You will also admire breathtaking views over the Tatra Mountains from the special observation tower. Afterwards, we will reach a famous site on the UNESCO World Heritage List – the Spis Castle. You will be amazed by its wonderful location – on a dolomite rock 200 meters above the surrounding area. Built in 12th century and owned by many royal families throughout the history, it is one of the largest castles in Central Europe where such movies like Dragonheart and The Last Legion were filmed.

Tour itinerary:

  1. hotel pick up at chosen time in the morning
  2. approx 2 hours and 45 min drive from your hotel in Krakow to Bachledova Valley in Slovakia
  3. up to 2 hours of Bachledka Treetop Tour with assistance of our private guide in chosen language which includes:
  • cable car ride up to Magura Spiska Mountain where the path is located
  • an unforgettable walk along the 600 metres long path between the treetops high above the ground level
  • educational plates with many interesting facts about the species of plants and animals in this region that you can read during the pleasant walk
  • unique opportunity to admire stunning views over the forest and over the mountains from the special, high observation point

4. free time for lunch
5. approx 1 hour drive from Bachledova Dolina to the Spis Castle – marvellous ruins of huge castle complex built in 12th century on a high hill, recognized by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site in 1993
6. visiting the Castle for up to 1,5 hour with assistance of our private guide in chosen language which will allow you to see:

  • exhibition of the Spis Museum which will help you imagine how the castle used to look like in the past before it was burned down in the 18th century
  • torture dungeon – here you will have a chance to see the devices of torture used in the past
  • St. Elisabeth’s Chapel – very small, with tall, arched windows
  • replica of a bedroom with a chair, bed and preacher chair
  • replica of the castle’s kitchen – you can feel here the atmosphere of the once prepared feasts for royal families
  • armory with weaponry used in the medieval times
  • tower of the castle – it is necessary to climb up to see the panorama of the mountains and area surrounding the castle

7. approx 3,5 hours drive back from Spis Castle to Krakow
