Pszczyna

Pszczyna is a little charming town with a historical past – here were enacted the Hussites' combats and a story of the Seven Years War. About Pszczyna demanded even russian empress Catherine II from the prussian king.

In the past Pszczyna lied on a trade route from Ukraine via Bohemia to the Danube. In the 19th century it passed to the german family Hochberg who stayed here until 1943. During 1944 Pszczyna became a witness of the Auschwitz prisoners' „death march”. Fortunately the town did not suffer from a serious devastation by the war and many precious monuments have survived here. In the market square flanked by 18th and 19th-century houses, stand neo-Baroque town hall and Evangelical church from 1907. But the most interesting part of Pszczyna is the neo-Baroque palace with a beautiful park complex, transformed in 19th century from the former medieval castle. The building on the edge of ancient Pszczyna forest, was used as a haunting lodge for many centuries. During the World War I the Pszczyna Castle served as the Prussian and Austrian army headquarter. Today the palace houses a museum with a collection of hunting trophies and authentic furniture. Worth visiting is also the Hall of Mirrors, decorated with two huge mirrors, about 14 sq m each.

Another great attraction of Pszczyna is The Bisons Reserve, where visitors can watch representatives of this great species.
