Zywiec
Zywiec is a charming town situated between the Beskid Maly and Zywiec Beskid Mountains. The town is especially known for its excellent beer but also for its beautiful historical monuments and live tradition cultivated among others during „the Days of the Beskid Culture”. It is also a good starting point for a hiking excursions into the mountains.
The history of Zywiec is around 700 years old. Its name comes from the world „żywić” (to feed) what indicates that the local land was fertile and rich with the wildlife. In the past Zywiec was owned by the Komorowski family and from the 19th century by the Habsburgs. The most valuable objects centered close to the market square: the 19th-century town hall and the 16th-century Church of the Nativity of the Virgin Mary with a Gothic crucifix from the 13th century and the relics of the Habsburg family in the Habsburg Chapel. Not far from the Parish Church is the Gothic Church of the Holy Cross (14th century). In the city are also beautiful objects of the secular architecture: the Renaissance castle and neoclassical palace built by the Habsburgs, which houses a school complex. The old castle was built in the 16th century and you can see there a permanent exhibition „the Religious Art of the Zywiec region”. Both building are surrounded by a 25-ha landscape park. Another great attractions are the artificial Zywiec lake with its water-sports facilities and the Zywiec Brewery Museum. [Others]
