Reszel

Reszel is a small but beautiful town situated in the north part of Poland, which is considered as a real gem of this area with its rich history, unusual landmarks and the neighborhood of the beautiful Masurian Great Lake District. The town can boast of having seven medieval wonders of Reszel from the 14th century.

The seven medieval wonders of Reszel are: the Old Town, the Warmian bishops' castle, the parish Church of St. Peter and Paul, a municipial water system, a municipial sewage system and the urban moat with the fragments of the defensive walls. The Gothic two-wing castle was built there in the second half of the 14th century and belonged to the property of the Warmian bishops. Together with the town it was surrounded by the walls so that the entire complex was making an impression of the powerful defensive system. On the ground floor there were a kitchen, a pantry and an armory; on the first floor – the bishops' living rooms. The highest floors have been used as a warehouse and granaries. Several times the castle was besieged and conquered by the Polish, Teutonic Knights' and Swedish army. In the 19th century it was adapted into a prison and its east wing was turned into an Evangelical Church. In 1811 one of the Europe's last judgments sentencing the accused to the death by burning at the stake was taken there. Today the castle houses a Warmia and Mazury's folk art gallery. On the main square there is also the Gothic Church of Saints Peter and Paul built in the 14th century with an amazing vaulting added at the end of the 15th century. Its high altar contains the painting of the saits Peter, Paul and Catherine by A. Blank.
