Hollywood movies filmed in Poland

„The Witcher”

„The Witcher” hardly needs an introduction, and it’s even harder to find better news for fans of this production. Some of the shots to Neflix’s newest original series are filmed in Poland. According to the information, the series is shot in the Silesian Ogrodzieniec Castle.

The adaptation of the famous story by Andrzej Sapkowski is one of the most anticipated Netflix productions of 2019. So far, the series was filmed at the Spanish La Palma island and in Hungary.

But some of the scenes will be shot in Poland. The film set is currently standing at the area of the Ogrodzieniec Castle in Podzamcze!

„Schindler’s List”

This is definitely the most famous movie ever to be shot in Poland. After all, it tells a true story, which happened in Krakow during World War II. The scenes for the Oscar-winning Steven Spielberg drama were filmed among others, in Oscar Schindler’s enamelled Dish Factory, at the Krakow Market Square, the Pilsudski bridge, The Krakow Glowny railway station, szeroka street in Kazimierz, the tenement house by 12 Józefa street, in the Plaszow district, as well as in Niepolomice and at the external side of the Auschwitz-Birkenau concentration camp wall.

„The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe”

Another movie on our list is a fantasy movie based upon a book series by C.S. Lewis, which are a classic of children’s literature. Most of the outdoor scenes were shot in Poland. Our local landscapes were imitating the titular Narnia. The movie crew got to Poland probably thanks to Janusz B. Czech, who was the movie’s production manager. And so, the scenes were filmed among others, in the Stolowe Mountains, the Bialowieza Forest and Sudety.

„The Pianist”

Another wartime drama taknig place and filmed in Poland. In this case, it shouldn’t be a surprise, since it was directed by none other than Roman Polanski. He told an emotional story of an outstanding pianist – Wladyslaw Szpilman. Because he was met with World War II in Warsaw, many scenes were filmed in such places of the Polish capital, as the Praga and Krakowskie Przedmiescie, as well as in Lodz. But we have to honestly admit, that this motion picture is not an American production. It was a co-production between France, Germany, Poland and Great Britain. However, because of the international range, it just had to appear on this list.

„Proof of life”

Now this is a pure Hollywood production – a movie with Russell Crowe in the main role entitled „Proof of life” The action of this movie takes place in a fictional country, resembling Columbia. Several scenes taking place in Chechnya were shot in Poland. The filmmakers arrived to the military compund in Biedrusko, nearby Poznan. This was also the location of a church, which played the part of a Chechnya mosque. More scenes were also filmed for the movie in the surroundings.

„The reader”

Yet another drama with war in the background. „The reader” is an American-German movie directed by Stephen Daldry, based upon a best-selling book of the same name by Bernhard Schlink. It tells the story of a relationship between a young boy and a woman, who is older than him. Their romance ends all of a sudden, when the woman just disappears. Eight years later, the protaganist, as a full-grown man, finds out, that his ex-lover is one of the people accused in the process against the Nazi criminals. It turns out, that that she was a guardian at the concentration camp. Many scenes of the movie were filmed in Lublin, at the Majdanek National Museum. It served as one of the German death camps in France.
