Roztocze National Park

The Roztocze National Park was created on may 10th 1974 and is located in the central-eastern part of Poland, in the lubelskie region. It contains the most precious natural areas of Roztocze Tomaszowskie.

The forests of the park are characterized by huge dynamism of development and good wholesomeness. It is manifested by the ease of natural revivals, as well as the longevity and notable sizes of trees, many of which reach monumental sizes. Most of the trees in the Park are pines, firs and beeches. The other 30 types include oak, alder, lime, birch-tree, spruce, larch, hornbeam sycamore, ash and maple. Many of them, (like the firs and beeches) can reach the limits of compact occurrence.

The flora of the park is rich and diverse Among more than 700 types of vascular plants you can find – depending on the settlement and the shape of the area – typical lowland plants as well as mountain types of plants. The wildlife of the park is equally rich. You can find all the typical forest animals here: the deer, the roe, the boar, the wolf, the fox, the badger, the marten, and by the water – the otter. Sometimes you might even find the moose and the lynx. There are also numerous bug-eating protected mammals (shrews) rodents from the pilchowate family (dormouse, dewberry), as well as bats.

The lives of local people were connected with the areas of today’s park for a very long time. During the wars, forests were giving shelter and served as a battle base, and during the times of peace, they provided food and wood. Numerous forest graves and monuments from different time periods – in Zwierzyniec and its surroundings – are the evidence of the eventful history of this place.

The park is dominated by on-foot and bicycle tourism. There are 64.5 kilometers of walking trails,, discovery paths and bike routes. In total, the park is visited by about 120 000 people anually. The main center of education and and tourist movement service is the Educational Museum Complex, located in the antique part of Zwierzyniec. Among others, this center presents the permanent multimedia nature exhibit called „The land of fir, beech and the tarpan. The RPN Educational Museum Complex has everything tha’s necessary to organize cameral meetings, and the complement in receiving practical knowledge about the nature of the park are outdoor activities, mostly organized at the educational paths. They are based on discovering the path by using various senses. Contacting with nature gives more possibilities to shape your feelings, discover the secrets of ecosystems and observe their proceses and dependences between organisms.
