The increasing popularity of visiting Auschwitz

On 2nd January 2020, new rules of visiting and making reservations at the Auschwitz-Birkenau memorial will start to take effect. One of the most important changes will be introducing dedicated tickets, also for group visits. The goal of such a change is to eliminate the illegal ticket trading by some companies, which bring visitors to the memorial.

„For some time now, we have noted accidents of speculating with tickets, as well as flooding the museum’s internet system with a gigantic number of reservations made „to spare”. We also know, that this caused the creation of the so-called „grey zone” of trading purchased cards in bulk, hich was bad for individual visitors.” said the manager of the Museum – dr. Piotr M. A. Cywinski.

Starting from the next year, each reservation – for both individual and group visitors – will require giving information about the participants.

Because of the huge interest of everyone, who might want to visit the authentic Memorial, we encourage to to book dates in the biggest possible advance – for field trips with an educator and for free visits without an educator.

The number of people visiting the Auschwitz Memorial has beaten the 2018 record of frequency. Last year, the area of the former German Nazi Auschwitz concentration and death camp were visited by 2 million 152 thousand people from all over the world.

„Last year’s score was accomplished by the end of November. This means that this year’s total frequency might get close to even 2.3 millions, because in December 2018 alone, we have noted more than 110 thousand visitors, and every month of this year, you could actually notice several percent of increasing visitors” Said Andrzej Kacorzyk, the director of the International Auschwitz and Holocaust Education Centre.
