Lodz: Lichen Sanctuary Tour

One of the most important places of Marian cult in Poland is located in the village of Lichen Stary, around 130 km northwest of Lodz. Sanctuary of Our Lady of Sorrows includes: church complex, chapels, monasteries, cemetery, stone Golgotha, museum of basilica construction, numerous figures and monuments as well as other sacred buildings and pilgrimage infrastructure. The main church of the sanctuary is currently the Basilica of the Blessed Virgin Mary of Lichen. It was consecrated in 2004, construction was funded by pilgrims’ donations. Today it is an important pilgrimage destination but also the biggest church in the country and one of the tallest in the world (with a tower measuring 141.5 meters in height). The Image of Our Lady of Lichen is the main icon of worship.

Old part of the Sanctuary:

• St Dorothy Church, with a neo-gothic shape and a Baroque interior,
• Tomasz Klossowski’s tomb, a symbolic tomb and the chapel depicting the scene of the apparition near Leipzig. Two years after Tomasz’s death, in the place where he had hung the painting, there were apparitions of Our Lady to the shepherd Mikolaj Sikatka.
• Mikolaj Sikatka’s tomb, a symbolic tomb of the apparitions witness,
• Chapel of the Holy Cross, with the crucifix damaged during the World War II which is ​​highly revered by the faithful,

The Basilica of the Blessed Virgin Mary of Lichen built between 1994-2004, the biggest church in Poland:

• main nave of the basilica, which is 120 meters long and 77 meters wide,
• main icon of worship – the Image of Our Lady of Lichen, an oil copy of the painting of Our Lady of Rokitno Wielkopolski, made by unknown artist in the second half of the 18th century on a thin, larch board,
• chapels of the lower basilica, the oldest one is the chapel of the Holy Trinity from 1996 (accommodates around 2,500 people); the other important chapel is the one dedicated to 108 Martyrs of World War II etc.
