Sopot: Tour to Stutthof Concentration Camp
Merely an hour’s drive from Sopot, a solemn but essential experience awaits at the Stutthof Concentration Camp. This poignant site holds the distinction of being the first operating concentration camp on Polish soil, constructed by the Germans in 1939. Its sinister purpose was to eliminate the Jewish and Polish intellectual elite hailing from the Pomerania region and the Free City of Gdansk. Originally serving as a forced labor camp, Stutthof underwent a harrowing transformation into a death camp. Here, thousands of individuals from various nations endured forced labor, routine torment, and the horrific fate of the gas chambers.
