Szczecin: 2 Day Tour to Auschwitz and Krakow

Auschwitz-Birkenau stands as a highly visited site in Poland, notable for being the largest site of mass murder in history, originally established by the German Nazis in 1940 and initially spanning 40 square kilometers known as Auschwitz I. By January 1942, the camp expanded to include Auschwitz II – Birkenau, about 2 km away from the original camp, marking the year when the Nazis embarked on the “Final Solution.”

In 1947, the Auschwitz-Birkenau State Museum was founded on the grounds of the former camp to honor the victims and serve as a reminder of the atrocities that claimed the lives of over 1.1 million individuals, including children and the elderly. Around 30 years later, the entire complex was recognized as a UNESCO World Culture and National Heritage Site.

Visitors to Auschwitz I can explore various historical artifacts, including the camp barracks, the “Arbeit Macht Frei” gate, several exhibitions displaying prisoners’ personal items, Block 11 (also known as the Death Block) with its Death Wall, and the first gas chamber and crematorium. A brief journey to Auschwitz-Birkenau reveals further poignant sites: the entrance gate used by prisoner transports, the railway ramp, remains of gas chambers and crematoria I and II, memorials dedicated to the victims, the Sauna (main camp bathhouse), the Kanada (storage for confiscated possessions), and the remnants of gas chambers and crematoria IV and V, along with the barracks.

The tour also includes an opportunity to discover Krakow during a free afternoon on the first day, with the option of exploring the city independently or with a knowledgeable local guide. Krakow, the city of kings, offers a journey through history with its stunning architecture and historic sites, including the Wawel Royal Castle, Europe’s largest market square with the Cloth Hall, the Town Hall tower, and other significant landmarks.
