This Sanctuary of the Blessed Virgin Mary is the most famous Polish Marian shrine and is the third-largest Catholic pilgrimage site in the world – visited by 5 million pilgrims each year. Home to the beloved miraculous icon of Our Lady of Czestochowa, the most important icon for the Catholics in Poland, depicting Madonna and Child, was probably painted in 1434 on the older Byzantine icon. Monastery itself was built in 1382 and witnessed great historical events, such as victorious defense against the Swedes in 1655.

Tour itinerary:

3. walking sightseeing tour of Jasna Gora Monastery with private local monk guide in chosen language – up to 1,5 hours visit during which you will be able to see:

• Knights’ Hall – early medieval chamber with paintings showing the long history of the Monastery and Polish banners.
• The Basilica of Jasna Gora – Baroque decoration of the high altar and of the ceiling, the latter by Karl Dankwart.
• The Chapel of Miraculous Painting of Our Lady with the image of Black Madonna of Czestochowa, to which miraculous powers are attributed – Jasna Gora’s most precious treasure. Founded in 1382 by Pauline monks who came from Hungary at the invitation of Władysław, Duke of Opole, the monastery withstood several sieges, including the legendary 40-day siege by the Swedes in 1655. 
• Museum of the 600th Anniversary of Jasna Gora Monastery – established in 1982 with exhibitions showing artistic and cultural activities of the guardians of Jasna Gora – Pauline monks.
• The Treasury – one of the oldest parts of the Monastery where you can see the most precious gifts handed over to Our Lady of Jasna Gora throughout the centuries
