Bydgoszcz: 2 Day Tour to Auschwitz and Krakow

Auschwitz-Birkenau stands as the most significant site of genocide in history, attracting numerous visitors. Originally established by the German Nazis as Auschwitz I in 1940 across 40 square kilometers, it later expanded to include Auschwitz II – Birkenau by January 1942, marking a pivotal moment in the execution of the “Final Solution.”

In 1947, the location was repurposed as the Auschwitz-Birkenau State Museum, serving as a memorial to the more than 1.1 million individuals, including children and the elderly, who were victims of the atrocities committed there. Roughly 30 years later, it was recognized as a UNESCO World Culture and National Heritage Site.

At Auschwitz I, the exhibits include the camp’s barracks, the “Arbeit Macht Frei” gate, collections of the prisoners’ personal items, Block 11 or the Death Block, the Death Wall, and the original gas chamber and crematorium. The tour extends to Auschwitz-Birkenau, featuring the main gate, the railway ramp used for prisoner transport, remnants of gas chambers and crematoria I and II, memorials to the victims, the Sauna, the Kanada complex, and the ruins of gas chambers and crematoria IV and V, as well as the barracks.

Visitors also have the opportunity to explore Krakow. They can spend a free afternoon on the first day either discovering the city on their own or with a local guide. Krakow, the city of kings, captivates visitors with its stunning architecture and historical sites, including the Wawel Royal Castle, the largest market square in Europe featuring the Cloth Hall, the Town Hall tower, and other significant attractions.
