Krakow: Private Tour to Auschwitz – Birkenau

The Auschwitz Concentration Camp – the largest mass murder site in the human history, established by German Nazis in 1940.
The first Nazi base in Auschwitz covered 40 square kilometres. Now it is known as Auschwitz I. In January 1942, the Nazis decided to roll out the “Final Solution” and the extermination camp Auschwitz-Birkenau (located approx. 2 km from Auschwitz I) was opened in the same year. It is assumed that about 1.1 million people lost their lives here.
The Auschwitz-Birkenau State Museum was established on 2 July 1947 on the area of the former concentration camp. Approx. 30 years later the whole complex was listed a UNESCO World Culture and National Heritage Site.

Today sightseeing with a local guide includes Auschwitz I– the main camp and Auschwitz II Birkenau. During the sightseeing of Auschwitz I you will have a chance to see: camp infrastructure barracks, The Arbeit Macht Frei gate, numerous exhibitions showing personal belongings of the prisoners, Block 11 (the Death Block) with with so-called Death Wall, the site of the execution of the camp commandant Rudolf Hoss, the gas chamber and crematorium I. After short ride to Auschwitz- Birkenau, you will see: the entrance gate (through which trains carrying prisoners to the camp), the railway ramp, the ruins of gas chambers and crematoria I and II, the monuments to the victims, the Sauna (the main camp bathhouse), the Kanada (the storehouses for loot), the ruins of gas chambers and crematoria IV and V and the barracks.

The Auschwitz-Birkenau Museum and Memorial is visited by great numbers of visitors each year.
