Bialystok: Augustow and Suwalki Landscape Park Tour

The region of Podlasie may seem to be inconspicuous but there are many places worth visiting here. One of them is Augustow – a beautiful, tourist town often called the „summer capital of Podlasie”. Town owes its attractiveness to the location in the midst of lakes and Augustow Primeval Forest. The surrounding nature gives it a unique character and encourages lots of tourists to visit it. It is a perfect place for a summer holiday which offers plenty of opportunities. During this tour, we will also visit the Suwalki Landscape Park to cherish the nature of Suwalki Region (Suwalszczyzna) as well. Tour itinerary:

  1. hotel pick up at chosen time
  2. up to 1,5 hour drive from Bialystok to Augustow by a comfortable car/van with our private guide in chosen language
  3. visiting Augustow for up to 1 hour with our private guide during which you will see:
  • the Zygmunt August Market – the oldest part of the town nowadays the center of evening life of Augustow residents and tourists. The square with the park from the 19th century called the Saxon Garden or Jagiellonian Garden is embellished with restored tenement house
  • the Promenade – another point that should be on the route of Augustow – it leads along the Netta River, it is beautifully restored.

4.a cruise on the Augustow Canal to the Rospuda Valley (1 hour and 20 min) – on the way we will see the Augustow lakes, the Augustow Primeval Forest, fragment of the Rospuda River – during the cruise, we will have the opportunity to hear a bit about the history of the Augustow Canal, learn a bit about the surrounding nature and enjoy its beautiful views

5.approx. 45 min. drive to the Museum of Lake Wigry in Wigry National Park – Museum presents the natural history of the Suwalki Region from the last ice age to the present days. One can acquaint with the wildlife of the biggest lake of the region from the bottom to the lakeshore.

6.up to 40 min. drive to the Suwalki Landscape Park – the Suwalki Landscape Park was established in 1976 as the first of this kind in Poland. It covers an area of over 8 thousand ha together with the protection zone. The park area abounds in open spaces with numerous lakes and forests interwoven with rivers, meadows, fields and swamps. It protects a unique postglacial landscape – the most valuable advantage of the park. The relief was mostly shaped by the glacier during the last ice age. The remains of this are moraine uplands, postglacial lakes and river valleys. The ice sheet has created many lakes, including the deepest in Poland and lowland in Europe – Lake Hancza with a depth of 108.5 m

7.on the way to the Suwalki Landscape Park, we can make a stop for lunch in the restaurant Pod Jelonkiem in Jeleniewo which offers regional dishes and fresh fish (1 hour)

8.Visiting the Suwalki Landscape Park for up to 1,5 hour in which we will have the chance to see:

  • Smolniki (40 min. stop) – small village with two viewpoints, from which a vast part of the park can be seen with a view of the Cisowa Mountain (one of the highest hills in the park) and Jaczno Lake where the largest denivelation can be seen in the Park (120 meters of height difference 500 meters distance from the viewpoint of lake Jaczno);
  • Hancza Lake (a few minutes stop) – the deepest lake in Poland with maximum depth of 108.5 m
  • the Bachanowo boulder (30 min.) – a walk through the reserve to the Czarna Hancza Valley
