  • the original section of the camp – this area initially featured 8 barracks for detainees and a significant building (the “kommandantur”) for the SS staff.
  • the expanded section – in 1942, the SS began expanding the camp, adding an additional thirty barracks.
  • ‘the Death Gate’ – the primary gateway for transporting numerous people into the camp.
  • the Monument to Struggle and Martyrdom – designed by Wiktor Tolkin and revealed on May 9, 1968, on the 23rd anniversary of the camp’s liberation.
  • the home of the KL Stutthof commander – functioned as the administrative hub of the camp.
  • the gas chamber – originally used for disinfecting garments, it was subsequently transformed into a gas chamber for executing inmates with “Zyklon B” (the chamber was heated in advance to expedite the liberation of hydrocyanic acid); it had a capacity for 150 individuals at a time – when more prisoners needed to be executed, the SS used wagons as temporary gas chambers.
  • the watchtower – a lookout point for overseeing prisoners, especially during nighttime.
  • the crematorium – the central area contains three furnaces for burning the remains of gas chamber victims; currently, it features permanent exhibitions about Stutthof’s role as a death camp, including a genuine Zyklon B container; other parts of the exhibit discuss the camp’s ‘evacuation’, the Death Marches, and a section dedicated to the Stutthof trials that pursued the perpetrators.
  • barracks – simple wooden structures with bunk beds where inmates slept; these lacked windows, heating, or proper sanitation facilities.
