Gdynia: Stutthof Concentration Camp Tour

Just 1,5 hour’s drive from Gdynia takes you to the first functioning German Nazis concentration camp in Poland – the Stutthof Camp. Established by the Germans in 1939, its primary purpose was the elimination of the Jewish and Polish intelligentsia from the Pomerania region and the Free City of Gdansk. Initially a forced labor camp, it later transformed into a death camp. Here, thousands from various countries were compelled to labor, subjected to regular torture, and many were ultimately killed in gas chambers. The victims were often patriotic, educated, prominent, and active members of Polish societies. It is estimated that around 85,000 people lost their lives at Stutthof. Presently, the vast 20-hectare site is home to the State Stutthof Museum, preserving the remnants of its dark history. Despite the somber nature of this site, visiting it to understand and acknowledge its historical significance is considered valuable.

  • the new camp – in 1942, the SS initiated the construction of a “new” camp, adding thirty more barracks.
  • ‘the Death Gate’ – the principal entryway through which countless individuals were brought into the camp.
  • the Monument to Fight and Martyrdom – crafted by Wiktor Tolkin, unveiled on May 9, 1968, marking the 23rd anniversary of the camp’s liberation.
  • the residence of the KL Stutthof commandant – served as the administrative nucleus of the concentration camp.
  • the gas chamber – initially intended for disinfecting clothing, it was later converted into a gas chamber for executing prisoners using “Zyklon B” (the chamber was preheated to speed up the release of hydrocyanic acid); it could hold up to 150 people at once – when there were more prisoners to be executed, the SS also utilized wagons as makeshift gas chambers.
  • the guard’s tower – a surveillance spot for monitoring the prisoners, particularly at night.
  • the crematorium – the main room houses three ovens where the bodies of gas chamber victims were incinerated; it currently hosts permanent exhibits detailing Stutthof’s function as a death camp, including an authentic Zyklon B canister; other sections of the exhibit narrate the camp’s ‘evacuation’, the Death Marches, and a segment focusing on the Stutthof trials targeting the culprits.
  • barracks – basic wooden constructions with bunk beds where prisoners slept; these lacked windows, heating, or sanitary amenities.
