Wroclaw: Karkonosze Mountains and Karpacz Tour

Karpacz is the most popular town to visit and best destination if you would like to spend your holiday in the Karkonosze Mountains. It is a good starting point if you would be interested in climbing the mountains or if you like skiing in the winter time. Besides its beautiful landscape it also has many other attractions worth seeing. During this tour you will also have the chance to see the region’s unique monument – the Vang Stave Tempel. We are sure it will be a pleasure for you to hike along the mountain trail and have the opportunity to cherish nature, peace, admire the surrounding views and finally rest at the charming Samotnia Shelter. Tour itinerary:

  1. pick up from your hotel in Wroclaw at chosen time
  2. up to 2,5 hours drive from Wroclaw to Karpacz by private car/van with English speaking driver
  3. approx. 1,5 hour hike on your own from the Vang Stave Tempel in Karpacz to the Samotnia Shelter (it is obligatory to follow the signs leading to the main point on the blue and green trail)
  • opposite the entrance to the Vang Church, there is also entrance to the Karkonosze Mountains National Park and from here we will go towards Rozdroza na Polanie (1050-1100 metres above sea level); this part of the trail runs mainly through the forest, in the first part spruce, which later turns into a mixed forest; in the vicinity of Rozdroza Na Polanie, the blue trail joins the green trail – from this place, we can already admire the unique landscapes of the Karkonosze Mountains – on our right side we will see the popular Pilgrims’ rocks, in front of it there is the Great and Small Pond cauldrons, on the left side we can admire Sniezka, Kopa and Czarny Grzbiet mountains;
  • the Samotnia Shelter is one of the oldest mountain shelters in Poland, it lays on the trail between the Vang Church and the Sniezka Peak; it is a beautifully located in the post-glacial cirque of the picturesque Small Pond; contrary to its name, the pond is not so small at all – it is 255m long, 185m wide and 6.5m deep and it was named ‘Small’ only because of its neighbour – much larger pond known as the Great Pond; Great and Small Ponds are naturally formed mountain lakes, they were formed in deep post-glacial cauldrons

4. 1 hour of free time to have a rest and a meal in the shelter and take pictures
5. up to 1,5 hour walk back to Karpacz
6. 10 min. of visiting the interiors of Vang Church – a wooden Protestant temple built without the use of nails; a pearl of the Karkonosze Mountains built in the 12th century, the only monument of the Nordic architecture in Poland; the name comes from the settlement at Lake Vang situated in the southern part of Norway opposite the entrance to the Vang Church, there is also entrance to the Karkonosze Mountains National Park and from here we will go towards Rozdroza na Polanie (1050-1100 metres above sea level); this part of the trail runs mainly through the forest, in the first part spruce, which later turns into a mixed forest; in the vicinity of Rozdroza Na Polanie, the blue trail joins the green trail – from this place, we can already admire the unique landscapes of the Karkonosze Mountains – on our right side we will see the popular Pilgrims’ rocks, in front of it there is the Great and Small Pond cauldrons, on the left side we can admire Sniezka, Kopa and Czarny Grzbiet mountains;

7. 2 hours of free time in Karpacz where we also recommend to see (you can either walk or ask the driver to take you to the Lower Part of Karpacz):

  • Dam on the Lomnica River – a dam reservoir, crest and picturesque cascades of Lomnica – one of the wildest and most dangerous rivers in Karkonosze Mountains; the crest of the dam is 105 m long; it formed a small dam reservoir and a picturesque waterfall
  • Wild Waterfall – located close to the lower station of the Kopa chair lift; it was created as a result of accumulation of water of Lomnica River and its name refers to the nature of the river

8. up to 2,5 hours drive back from Karpacz to Wroclaw
9. drop off at your hotel in Wroclaw
