Poznan: Gniezno & Biskupin Tour
This is one of the most interesting one day excursions that can be taken anywhere in Poland because this tour will take you back in time to the very begginings of state of Poland. Gniezno was first capital city of our country and Biskupin is the best example of an Iron Age fortified settlement in Poland.
In Gniezno we will show you the 14th century Gothic Cathedral of the Assumption of St Mary. In 997 the relics of St Wojciech (St Adalbert) were laid here and until today are kept in silver casket inside the church. Cathedral was also the place where many Polish Kings were crowned between 1025 and 14th century. You will also see the famous Bronze Doors made in the late 12th century depicting some of the scenes from the life and martydom of St Wojciech. Afterwards we will go to Piast Park for a short visit in Museum of the Origins of the Polish State.
Next stop in our program will be one of Poland’s official national Historic Monuments – archaeological open-air museum Biskupin. You will see the remains of approx 2500 years old settlement situated on a marshy peninsula in Lake Biskupin. When we finish sightseeing, we will come back to Poznan.
