Poznan: Gniezno & Biskupin Tour

If you are staying in Poznan and have time for an interesting half day excursion, we would like to invite you for a trip to Gniezno and Biskupin. It is an obligatory tour if you would like to learn about the beginnings of Poland as a country because Gniezno was its first capital city. Here we will show you the famous 14th century Gothic Cathedral of the Assumption of St Mary. Afterwards, we will go to the Museum of the Origins of the Polish State for a short visit. Another important tourist attraction in our program will be one of Poland’s official National Historic Monuments – the Archaeological open-air Museum of Biskupin. You will admire the remains of a nearly 2500 years old settlement situated on a marshy peninsula on the Biskupin Lake.

Tour itinerary:

  1. pick up from your hotel at chosen time
  2. up to 1 hour drive from Poznan to Gniezno
  3. 1 hour of guided visit inside the Cathedral in Gniezno – place where many Polish Kings were crowned between 1025 and 14th century, called the Mother of Polish Cathedrals, and one of the most important monuments on so-called Piast Dynasty Trail; during this tour with our private guide in chosen language you will see:
  • the impressive interior including relics of St. Wojciech (Adalbert) – the first Polish saint with his reconstructed former tomb
  • the Bronze Doors – formerly known as the Kingdom Jewel; it is one of the most valuable monuments of Romanesque art in Europe; the door consists of two cast bronze wings with knockers in the shape of lion heads, and in 18 panels there are scenes from the life of St. Wojciech
  • the basement with the relics of the coronation Cathedral of the Kings

4. after visiting the Cathedral we will take you for a guided walk to the Museum of the Origins of the Polish State, where you will watch a short film in English during which you will learn a little more about the history of the city, the whole region and the life of our former countrymen; you will have the chance to see the collection of founded artefacts including valuable archaeological monuments and works of art (around 20 minutes)
5. up to 45 min drive from Gniezno to Archaeological Museum in Biskupin – one of the largest archaeological reserves in Europe
6. visiting Biskupin Museum with our private guide in chosen language for up to 2 hours; during this guided tour you will see:

  • the original and reconstructed fragments of the oval settlement built around 700 BC, founded on a small island, surrounded by a wooden and earth rampart, about 6 metres high, above which a watchtower with an entrance gate towers; near this gate was the main square where meetings and fairs took place; there were wooden huts arranged in rows, each row of buildings was covered with a common roof; the interior of each house was divided into two parts – the main room with a hearth and a bed for the whole family, and a vestibule for animals
  • the exhibition pavilion where you will be be able to admire original weapons, tools, utensils, ornaments, remnants of crops and even bones of domestic animals that were bred in Biskupin around 25 centuries ago
