Poznan: 2 Day Tour to Auschwitz and Krakow

Auschwitz-Birkenau, Poland’s most visited memorial, holds the grim distinction of being history’s largest extermination site. Initially set up by German Nazis in 1940 as Auschwitz I over an area of 40 square kilometers, it expanded with the addition of Auschwitz II – Birkenau by January 1942, a crucial phase in the Nazis’ implementation of the “Final Solution.”

The site, transformed into the Auschwitz-Birkenau State Museum in 1947, commemorates over 1.1 million lives lost, including those of children and the elderly, to the horrors perpetrated there. This entire complex earned UNESCO World Culture and National Heritage Site status about three decades later.

At Auschwitz I, visitors encounter historical displays such as the camp barracks, the iconic “Arbeit Macht Frei” gate, exhibitions of prisoners’ belongings, Block 11 or the Death Block, its Death Wall, and the original gas chamber and crematorium. Moving to Auschwitz-Birkenau, the journey continues with sights like the entrance gate, the prisoner transport railway ramp, ruins of gas chambers and crematoria I and II, victim memorials, the Sauna, the Kanada complex, and the remains of gas chambers and crematoria IV and V, along with the barracks.

Additionally, the visit offers a chance to explore Krakow. On a free afternoon on the first day, visitors can either wander the city on their own or join a local guide. Krakow, known as the city of kings, mesmerizes with its beautiful architecture and historical landmarks, including the Wawel Royal Castle, Europe’s biggest market square with the Cloth Hall, the Town Hall tower, and other notable sites.
