Torun: 2 Day Tour to Auschwitz and Krakow

Auschwitz-Birkenau is recognized as the most profound site of mass murder in history, drawing a significant number of visitors. Initially founded by the German Nazis as Auschwitz I in 1940, covering an area of 40 square kilometers, it was expanded to include Auschwitz II – Birkenau by January 1942, a critical step in implementing the “Final Solution.”

Transformed into the Auschwitz-Birkenau State Museum in 1947, it now commemorates the lives of over 1.1 million people, including children and the elderly, who fell victim to the brutal acts committed within its confines. Approximately three decades later, it earned the distinction of being a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

The museum at Auschwitz I features exhibits such as the camp’s barracks, the infamous “Arbeit Macht Frei” gate, displays of prisoners’ belongings, Block 11 known as the Death Block, the Death Wall, and the original gas chamber and crematorium. The visit continues at Auschwitz-Birkenau, where one can see the entrance gate, the railway ramp for transporting prisoners, the remains of gas chambers and crematoria I and II, tributes to the victims, the Sauna, the Kanada complex, and the remnants of gas chambers and crematoria IV and V, along with the barracks.

Additionally, there is an opportunity to explore Krakow. Visitors have a free afternoon on the first day to either roam the city independently or join a guided tour. Krakow, hailed as the city of kings, enchants its visitors with its exquisite architecture and historical landmarks, including the Wawel Royal Castle, Europe’s biggest market square with landmarks like the Cloth Hall and the Town Hall tower, among other notable sites.
