Lodz: Folk Tour

Tired of the big city? Want to learn something more about Polish folk art and culture? Take a deep breath and let us show you probably the most unique region of Poland which can be found in the close neighbourhood of Lodz. Town of Lowicz is located in central Poland and it is famous for being a place of clearly distinguished local culture. The folklore of the Lowicz region is one of the most recognizable in Poland and Europe. Its characteristic elements are language, folk handicrafts, as well as music, dance and original costumes from Lowicz. During our trip we will also focus on the local architecture from the past.

We offer private tours from Lodz to Lowicz, open air museum in Maurzyce and the Folk Museum in Sromow (the Museum of the Brzozowski’s family).

Tour itinerary:

  1. hotel pick up at chosen time
  2. up to 1,5 hour drive from Lodz to Sromow by private car/van with your private guide in chosen language
  3. arrival at the Folk Museum of Sromow and 1 hour private guided tour during which you will see:
  • The Museum of the Brzozowski’s family with four different exhibition buildings, surrounded by a beautiful garden,
  • 400 moving sculptures (wooden Nativity scene, a Corpus Christi procession, Polish hussars, a few fishermen by the river Bzura and a traditional wedding reception),
  • a common decoration in old Lowicz cottages – chandeliers, traditional colourful paper cut-outs and oil paintings on canvas,
  • collection of hand painted dowry chests and full-sized sculptures in old-fashioned folk outfits,
  • a collection of horse-drawn carriages,
  • a collection of horse harnesses and antique agricultural tools,

4. up to 30 min drive from Sromow to the Open Air Museum of Lowicz’s Folk Culture in Maurzyce village
5. up to 1 hour of private guided visit inside the museum during which you will see:

  • approx. 40 historic objects, mostly from the second half of 19th and 1st half of 20th century,
  • so called Old Village, closed farm, popular in the region from the middle of the 19th century,
  • so called New Village, with 5 farms and 3 detached houses,
  • an exhibition of plant protection equipment, a rural carpentry shop but also machines, tools and agricultural vehicles,
  • the so-called small architecture objects: roadside wells, chapels and crosses, buildings related with rural crafts and fire brigades,
  • church complex from Wysokienice consisting of a wooden, single-nave temple dating from 1758 and a belfry from 1774.

6. up to 15 min drive from the Museum in Maurzyce to the centre of Lowicz town
7. approx. 1 hour of private guided walking tour of this beautiful and picturesque city during which you will see:

  • Cathedral Basilica of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary and St. Nicholas, the baroque temple stands on the site of the first temple in Lowicz,
  • The Triangular Market, the former city market, one of the few triangular markets in Europe,
  • Church of Our Lady of Graces and St. Wojciech, built in the 17th century, distinguished by an unusual facade and beautiful baroque frescoes.
