Olsztyn: 2 Day Tour to Auschwitz and Krakow
Auschwitz-Birkenau is a prominent destination in Poland, recognized as the largest historical mass extermination site, initially established by the German Nazis in 1940 as Auschwitz I over an expanse of 40 square kilometers. By January 1942, it expanded to incorporate Auschwitz II – Birkenau, located approximately 2 km from the original site, signifying the commencement of the Nazis’ “Final Solution.”
Established in 1947, the Auschwitz-Birkenau State Museum was created on the site of the former camp to commemorate the memory of the more than 1.1 million men, women, and children who lost their lives to the brutalities inflicted there. Approximately three decades afterward, the site was declared a UNESCO World Culture and National Heritage Site.
At Auschwitz I, visitors have the opportunity to view a range of historical exhibits, including the barracks, the infamous “Arbeit Macht Frei” gate, various displays of prisoners’ belongings, Block 11 (known as the Death Block) along with its Death Wall, and the original gas chamber and crematorium. Moving to Auschwitz-Birkenau, visitors encounter additional moving landmarks such as the prisoner entrance gate, the railway ramp, ruins of gas chambers and crematoria I and II, memorials to the victims, the Sauna (the main bathhouse of the camp), the Kanada (the storage area for confiscated items), and the ruins of gas chambers and crematoria IV and V, as well as the barracks.
Additionally, the visit offers a chance to explore the historical city of Krakow on a free afternoon on the first day, with options for independent exploration or a guided tour with a local expert. Krakow, known as the city of kings, invites visitors to step back in time with its breathtaking architecture and historical landmarks, including the majestic Wawel Royal Castle, the largest market square in Europe featuring the Cloth Hall, the Town Hall tower, and various other notable sites.
